When the Schiller family started dreaming about the different ways to finish their basement, they wanted to find a reputable contractor that could create a unique design for their basement. After meeting with several contractors and Country Creek Builders, they knew that Country Creek Builders was the perfect choice due to our in-house designs, our design ideas, the detailed estimating process, and our cloud-based project management system that gave them access to the project schedule.
A DESIGN THAT MEETS EVERYONES NEEDS
After listening to the Schillers wants and needs, Country Creek started the design phase for their project. The design challenge for this project was to include a wet bar with seating, a family room area with a large TV, a bedroom, a play area for the children and a tiled bathroom for their family to use while visiting. There were a few constraints to fulfill the list of wants and needs. One included a narrow area where the bar would work best for their family. In order to make everything fit, the bar design included a walk-up bar and a “T” peninsula that would seat three. The benefit of this design was the narrow area of the basement would not be crowded with cabinetry. Since the kids liked playing restaurant, we designed a play area under the stairs that included a service window and a doorway for their own entrance.
DESIGNING AROUND EXISTING DUCT WORK
As with most unfinished basements, the existing heating ducts always seems to be in the wrong place. Country Creek Builders has some cool tricks designing around the existing duct work. We go to great lengths to hide the duct work, making it hard to determine where the ducts are located. Our designs often include trayed ceilings with rope lights and designing additional soffits where heat ducts are not located in order to balance the ceiling layout. Country Creek Builders will often design curved or arched soffits to bring a unique look to the soffits. We also have a few framing tricks that we use to minimize the height of the required soffits which gives you as much head room as possible.
THE FINISHED TOUCHES
The Schiller’s finished basement included a wet bar, family room cabinetry and a bathroom vanity that were made of Poplar wood and finished with a walnut stain. The countertops for the bar were Santa Cecelia granite and finished with Villano Beach tile for the splash. The tile selected for the bar floor was a Classico Ivory 30 x 60 Tile. The walls were painted with Sherwin Williams Malabar (SW9110).
Country Creek Builders often includes layered lighting in our designs. The layered lighting design for this finished basement included LED tape lights for the toe kick area of bar, LED under cabinet lighting, LED lighting in the soffit trays, and Puck lighting in the art niches. Additional LED Puck lights were also added in the soffits above the bars sink area to give additional lighting to the work area. By taking the time to design the lighting in layers, the homeowner can change their lighting options when needed.
