This Apple Valley, Minnesota homeowner’s main concern was hiring the wrong contractor. She had heard horror stories from friends and neighbors about the bad experiences that they had with their contractor and she did not want to make the same mistake. She was so worried about hiring the wrong contractor that she had dreams of the contractor not showing up to finish her kitchen remodel project. The first thing that Dar Spiegelberg did was talk to a friend that had recently finished a bathroom remodeling project with Country Creek Builders. After hearing about the great experience that the Goodman family had with Country Creek Builders, Dar made the decision to hire us to design and remodel her kitchen.
Turing a Small Kitchen Space into a Family Gathering Area
After discussing with the Spiegelberg family regarding what they liked and disliked about their current kitchen it was apparent that the kitchen space was to small and closed off from the rest of the home. To create a warm, inviting family gathering area Country Creek Builders would open up the space by removing a 14-foot-long load bearing wall that separated the kitchen from the dining room. To remove the wall, however, we had to install a 14’ long LVL beam to support the bedrooms above. Removing this wall gave us the flexibility to design a large one level island, creating a place for the kids to hang out when meals were being prepared. Removing a wall in any kitchen does create a large design challenge however; losing much needed cabinets. To make up for the loss of cabinets that were on the wall we relocated the patio door approximately 4’ feet from it’s current location. This also gave us the required space for the refrigerator. To make up for the loss of pantry cabinets, a free-standing pantry was designed between the kitchen and the dining room.
Tying in the Family Room
The desired flooring for this kitchen was a finished-on site wood floor. Country Creek Builders hired Rhodes Hardwood Flooring to install approximately 1100 sq feet of 2 ¼” Yellow Birch flooring in the kitchen, dining room, foyer, and family room. The color of the wood flooring was important to the homeowner so Rhodes custom mixed three different colors and stained an area of the flooring. This gave the homeowner the opportunity to see exactly what the finished floors would look like and helped them pick the perfect color and finish. The existing cherry cabinets and fireplace surround in the family room were in rough shape. Something needed to be done to bring them back to life. The previous owners of this home did not take care of the cabinets and they had deep nicks and scratches. After a discussion with the homeowners it was decided that the cabinets would be painted to match the new kitchen cabinets, and the fireplace surround would be lightly sanded with a new clear coat of lacquer; saving the cherry.
The Final Touches
The cabinets designed for this kitchen remodel are painted white with raised panel doors, and include soft close doors and drawers. A trash/recycle pull out drawer was designed into the island giving the homeowner a handy location for trash and recycle items. The back splash is tiled with Legno 4 X 16 Travertine tile and accented with new under cabinet lights. Two pendant lights were added above the island and a smaller coordinating pendant was installed above the kitchen sink. Country Creek Builders replaced the interior doors on the main level with six panel doors that were stained to match the fireplace surround. The door jambs and casing were painted white to match the kitchen cabinets.
