Eagan Basement Remodel: How Tim and Mary Beth Finally Started Using Their Basement After 30 Years

Tim and Mary Beth had lived in their Eagan home for almost 30 years. They barely used the basement.

After this remodel, they spend most of their time down there. That's the whole point.

The Starting Point

The basement had real problems layered on top of design problems. The bathroom was cramped. The bar was a U-shape that ate half the room and still didn't function well. A storage area sat unused. Radon levels needed to be addressed. The popcorn ceilings had never been touched. And the space just didn't work for how Tim and Mary Beth actually wanted to live.

They knew they wanted to fix it. They called Dan because he'd already remodeled their main bedroom and bathroom nine years earlier. They knew what to expect from him. That trust matters, and it shows up in how the project went.

The Bathroom

The original bathroom was expanded significantly by removing the wall between it and an adjacent closet. That reclaimed square footage changed everything. A large tiled shower went in. Full vanity with linen storage. LVT flooring that carries through the entire basement. The bathroom went from a room you used because you had to to one that's actually worth using.

The Bar

The old U-shaped bar came out. In its place went a walk-up bar design that actually has more cabinetry and more counter space than what it replaced, but gives the room back its breathing room. Two under-cabinet fridges. A side-by-side trash and recycle rollout. Upper wine storage. The bar is more functional than what was there before and the room feels twice as large because the layout no longer wraps around you.

The Games Room

The storage area became a games room. Shiplap-style suspended ceiling with crown molding. Room for a ping pong table. A space that gets used every week instead of holding boxes that should have been thrown away a decade ago. Sometimes the best thing you can do with dead storage space is replace it with something your family actually wants to be in.

The Details That Make It Cohesive

A steel post in the space got wrapped in oak to match the cabinetry and stair railing stain throughout. That single decision is what separates a basement that looks finished from one that looks designed. Every wood element in the space — bar, railing, post wrap — reads the same. That's intentional.

Popcorn ceiling was scraped throughout. Knockdown texture applied. All new lighting. Foam spray insulation down to the block. Radon treatment on the floor. Electrical and heating upgraded throughout.

What Tim and Mary Beth Said

They said they never worried once during the project. That Dan came in, assessed everything, told them what it would cost, and delivered exactly that. After nine years and two projects with Country Creek Builders, the trust was already there. This project reinforced it.
